Improve Your Home Air Quality

With winter months approaching it can mean your home doesn't get a lot of fresh air coming in. In the warmer seasons, we tend to open our windows and head in and out of the house more meaning new air is introduced to our HVAC system. Throughout winter, it's important to make sure the air quality in your home is maintained for health reasons and for heating systems. Stale air can lead to allergy issues since things like dust mites, pet dander, and mold spores are more likely to be circulating through your home. As Massillon's home air quality experts, we want to help you learn how to have better air in your home this winter.

As much as we don't like cleaning either, using your extra time stuck indoors to clean can help prevent allergy flareups. Cutting down on dust and animal dander is the number one way to quickly improve your air quality. Vacuuming with a clean filter twice a week is suggested for homes with a large number of pets, but just once a week for other homes. Investing in a HEPA filter for your vacuum can also help catch additional air debris other filters may miss. Clutter can trap and hold dust, so clearing off flat surfaces can reduce reactions. Making a habit of regular bedding changes can help rid dust mites and mold spores from the bedroom and bedding. When washing, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology recommends washing with water that is at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sometimes we see outdoor plants brought in for winter so they can continue growing. Indoor plants as well as any brought inside can be home for mold causing allergens to be released. Some argue that since plants release oxygen, they benefit air quality even though they are still a trigger for many people. If mold is a triggering air debris for you, plants in your home are probably not the greatest idea.

Clean air filters and air purifiers are the best way to improve your home's air quality. If you have a forced-air heating system, changing the filters regularly can help them from getting too dirty and allowing debris through. You can also have your ductwork professionally cleaned to help removed stuck dust and dirt. If you have been following our above air quality management tips and are still having allergen issues, it might be time to invest in an air-purifying system. We suggest an ionic air purifier to help cut down on your air irritants. Pairing a purifier with a dehumidifier can also help to control mold growth in damp areas like laundry rooms and basements.
